EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the Delta mission to the International Space Station (ISS) over the picturesque Netherlands. Taken in April 2004, this momentous mission involved Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers and a range of European science experiments. The print showcases the Soyuz spacecraft, specifically Soyuz TMA-4 and Soyuz TMA-3, positioned at the lower left corner. The ISS itself is an extraordinary collaborative project between national space agencies from the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia, and Europe. Constructed gradually since 1998, it orbits approximately 360 kilometers above Earth's surface. This technological marvel serves as a symbol of mankind's collective efforts to explore outer space. In this image, one can admire the intricate solar panels that adorn the ISS modules. These panels play a vital role in harnessing solar energy to power various scientific experiments conducted onboard. The Expedition 8 crew comprising Alexandr Kaleri and Michael Foale were replaced by Edward Fincke and Gennady Padalka from Expedition 9 during this particular mission. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring illustration created by Science Photo Library in collaboration with Dutch artists back in 2004, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. It serves as a testament to our boundless curiosity about what lies beyond Earth orbit and highlights how international cooperation propels us further into the depths of space exploration.
