EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by photographer Jonathan Barker, we are transported back to the summer of 1992 in Fowey, Cornwall. The image showcases a group of fearless penny farthing cyclists approaching the Bodinnick Ferry on their way to Plymouth, all in support of the Macmillan Nursing Charity. This extraordinary journey began a decade earlier in 1982 when St Ives solicitor Mike Clough initiated the first-ever penny farthing trip. Since then, it has become a biennial event that attracts both locals and visitors alike. These dedicated cyclists had spent the previous night at Golant Youth Hostel after pedaling all the way from Truro. Their ultimate destination? Brittany, where they aimed to raise funds for a French cancer charity. This incredible feat not only showcased their love for cycling but also highlighted their commitment to making a difference in people's lives. The photo itself captures the essence of this unique mode of transportation with its distinctive big wheel and small wheel combination. As these brave individuals navigate through Cornish roads, they rely on sponsorships and donations from generous supporters who believe in their cause. This heartwarming snapshot serves as a reminder that even unconventional means can be used for fundraising purposes. It is an ode to determination, community spirit, and above all else, compassion towards those affected by cancer – transcending borders and language barriers along the way.
