EDITORS COMMENTS
Victory at Vigo, 1702: A Triumph of Anglo-Dutch Naval Power This evocative image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Vigo, a pivotal moment in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). In October 1702, an Anglo-Dutch fleet, under the command of Sir George Rooke (1650-1711) and Admiral Cornelis Evertsen (1642-1706), successfully ambushed and destroyed a combined French and Spanish fleet in the harbor of Vigo, Galicia, Spain. The battle, which took place on October 21, 1702, was a significant victory for the Allied forces, as it not only prevented the French and Spanish from reinforcing their armies in Flanders but also resulted in the capture of twelve Spanish treasure galleons laden with gold and silver. The combined English and Dutch fleet, with its formidable arsenal of over 100 ships and 12,000 men, had used a daring bombardment strategy to decimate the enemy fleet. The victory at Vigo marked a turning point in the War of the Spanish Succession, boosting morale and providing much-needed financial resources for the Allied forces. The capture of the treasure galleons not only demonstrated the naval prowess of the Anglo-Dutch alliance but also highlighted the strategic importance of controlling the seas during wartime. This powerful print, by an unknown artist, captures the excitement and triumph of the moment, with the smoke of battle still rising from the harbor and the captured Spanish galleons anchored in the background. The cannons of the victorious ships are trained on the shore, a testament to the overwhelming force that had been brought to bear on the enemy. The victory at Vigo remains an enduring symbol of the strength and unity of the Anglo-Dutch alliance during a crucial period in European history.
