In October 1702, an Anglo-Dutch fleet, under the command of Sir George Rooke (1650-1711) and Admiral Cornelis Evertsen (1642-1706), successfully ambushed and destroyed a combined French and Spanish fleet in the harbor of Vigo, Galicia, Spain. The battle, which took place on October 21, 1702, was a significant victory for the Allied forces, as it not only prevented the French and Spanish from reinforcing their armies in Flanders but also resulted in the capture of twelve Spanish treasure galleons laden with gold and silver. The combined English and Dutch fleet, with its formidable arsenal of over 100 ships and 12,000 men, had used a daring bombardment strategy to decimate the enemy fleet.
