The card shows Oishi Yoshio ) - the chamberlain (karo) of the Ako Domain in Harima Province (now Hyogo Prefecture), Japan (1679 - 1701). Known as the leader of the Forty-seven Ronin in their 1702 vendetta and thus the hero of the Chushingura. Often referred to by his title, Oishi Kuranosuke - pictured here writing on the ceiling. In this 17th century Japanese print, Oishi Yoshio, also known as Oishi Kuranosuke, is depicted in a thoughtful moment as he pens a letter on the ceiling of his chambers. The chamberlain of the Ako Domain in Harima Province, now Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Oishi Yoshio (1659-1703) is best remembered for his role as the leader of the Forty-seven Ronin in their legendary vendetta against the treacherous daimyo Asano Naganori in 1702. The hero of the Chushingura, Oishi Yoshio is shown here with a brush and ink in hand, his concentration unbroken as he composes a message. The intricate design of the print includes an inset image of Arashiyama, a scenic district in Kyoto, adding to the serene and contemplative atmosphere.
