EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1802, showcases a fascinating assemblage of marine mammals. The image features five distinct species: a Bearded Seal (Erignathus barbatus, number 1), a Southern Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens, number 2), a Ringed Seal (Pusa hispida, number 3), and two Mediterranean Monk Seals (Monachus monachus, numbers 4 and 5). The Bearded Seal, with its distinctive whiskers and large size, is a true master of the Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. The Southern Sea Lion, native to the southern hemisphere, is a social and agile creature, often seen basking on rocky shores. The Ringed Seal, a versatile swimmer and diver, is the most widely distributed pinniped species in the Northern Hemisphere. Among the most intriguing creatures in this engraving are the two Mediterranean Monk Seals (Monachus monachus). Numbered among the world's most critically endangered marine mammals, these seals are found primarily in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Their population has drastically declined due to habitat loss, human disturbance, and hunting. This beautiful and historically significant engraving not only provides a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century but also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting these magnificent marine mammals and their habitats for future generations.
