EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured copperplate engraving from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829, a diverse assembly of rodent species is gathered around the base of a volcanic mountain. The scene is set against the backdrop of an erupting volcano, with plumes of ash and smoke billowing into the sky, and molten lava flowing down the mountain's slopes. At the center of the image, a group of meerkats or suricates, with their distinctive long, slender bodies and bushy tails, peer curiously at the volcanic activity. Nearby, a hamster scurries along the ground, its plump cheeks filled with seeds. A mangouste or mongoose, with its long, slender snout and banded tail, slithers through the undergrowth. A bobak or possum, with its prehensile tail and round, furry body, clings to a tree branch above. And in the foreground, a coqui or varied squirrel, with its bushy tail and distinctive ear tufts, gathers nuts. The female phalanger, or possum, is depicted in the upper left corner of the image, clinging to the tree trunk with her prehensile tail and using her sharp claws to grip the bark. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the engraving are a testament to the skill of the engraver, and the vibrant handcolouring adds depth and texture to the image. This engraving is a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century, showcasing a diverse array of rodent species and the volcanic landscape that forms a dramatic backdrop to their habitat. The image invites us to explore the wonders of nature and the intricate relationships between different species and their environments.
