EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Margaret Whigham, a British society figure and former Debutante of the Year (1930), attending the British Porcelain Ball held at Claridges in 1931. The event, organized by the Pageant of British Porcelain, aimed to raise funds for the National Birthday Trust Fund to extend maternity services. Margaret is dressed in an elaborate fancy dress, adorned with the theme of "Old Seville," as she poses next to a Coalport figure of the same name. The Coalport figure, a beautiful representation of Old Madrid, adds to the enchanting atmosphere of the evening. Margaret Whigham, later known as Mrs. Charles Sweeny and later still as the Duchess of Argyll, was a socialite whose life was marked by scandal and disgrace. Her divorce case, which involved the infamous "headless man" photographs, plunged her into penury. However, in this moment at the British Porcelain Ball, she is a radiant and elegant figure, surrounded by the beauty and grace of British porcelain. The event was an opportunity for society members to come together in support of a worthy cause, showcasing their fashionable attire and appreciation for the art of British porcelain.
