EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases four exotic moth species: the Tasar Silkmoth (Antheraea mylitta, formerly known as Saturnia mylitta), the Specious Tiger Moth (Asota speciosa, formerly known as Noctua speciosa), and the Hypocrita Pylotis (Callimorpha pylotis). The image is taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837. The Tasar Silkmoth, with its striking orange and black wings, is a well-known species of the Saturniidae family. It is native to India and is known for producing raw silk, which is used in the production of Tasar silk. The Specious Tiger Moth, with its vibrant orange and black wings adorned with white spots, is a member of the Arctiidae family. Its scientific name was previously listed as Noctua speciosa, but it has since been reclassified as Asota speciosa. The Hypocrita Pylotis, also known as the Blue Tiger Moth, is a beautiful moth with iridescent blue wings and black markings. It belongs to the Nymphalidae family and is native to Central and South America. This stunning lithograph provides a glimpse into the natural history of these exotic moths, showcasing their intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The meticulous hand-coloring adds an additional layer of detail and beauty to the already impressive illustrations. John O. Westwood was a renowned English naturalist and entomologist, who made significant contributions to the field of entomology during the 19th century. His work on Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology is considered a seminal work in the study of exotic insects and remains an important resource for entomologists and natural history enthusiasts today.
