EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two intriguing species of tortoises: the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and the Indian star tortoise (Geochelone elegans). The European pond turtle, also known as the mud tortoise or la Bourbeuse, is native to Europe and is characterized by its rounded carapace, which is covered in small, yellowish-brown spots. The species is semi-aquatic and can often be found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. In stark contrast, the Indian star tortoise, also known as the elegant tortoise or the cepede tortoise, is native to the Indian subcontinent. This species is easily recognizable by its distinctive star-shaped patterns on its carapace, which are formed by the arrangement of its scutes. The Indian star tortoise is a terrestrial species and prefers dry habitats such as grasslands and savannas. The illustration for this engraving was created by the renowned English naturalist, Dr. George Shaw, for his comprehensive work, "General Zoology, Amphibia." The engraving was then produced by Heath, using the copperplate technique, which was a popular method for producing detailed and accurate illustrations during the 18th and 19th centuries. The resulting image showcases the intricate details of these fascinating creatures, allowing us to appreciate their unique beauty and natural history.
