EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Tortoise and Turtles" from Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's "Natural History" (Naturgeschichte), published in Munich in 1886, showcases an enchanting assemblage of various tortoise and turtle species. The image features four distinctive members of the Testudines order: the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca), a vulnerable species native to the Mediterranean region; the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), a critically endangered marine dweller with a unique beaked mouth; the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), an endangered species known for its greenish fat and cartilage; and the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), a common species found in Europe. The Greek tortoise, depicted in its natural habitat, is shown with its distinctive, domed carapace and robust limbs, which enable it to dig burrows for shelter. The hawksbill sea turtle, with its distinctive beaked mouth, is shown gracefully gliding through the water, feeding on its favorite food, sponges. The green sea turtle, with its large, greenish-colored body, is shown basking on the sandy shores, while the European pond turtle, with its intricately patterned shell, is shown resting on a rock in a tranquil pond. This stunning representation of these magnificent creatures not only serves as a testament to the intricacies of natural history illustration during the late 19th century, but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect these species from extinction. The hawksbill sea turtle, in particular, has seen a significant decline in population due to hunting for its valuable shells, making conservation efforts crucial for its survival.
