Photo Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
Apothecaries Company
The Lambeth Drug Mill stood in Grays Walk, roughly where the Ethelred Street estate now lies, to the north of Black Prince Road. Although the association of this windmill with the Apothecaries Company has now been disproved, it is certain that the mill was in the tenancy, up to about 1790, of persons carrying on the trade of druggist and apothecary. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image of The Lambeth Drug Mill, taken in 1875, transports us back in time to the bustling streets of South London over a century ago. The Lambeth Drug Mill, which once stood in Grays Walk, roughly where the Ethelred Street estate now lies, to the north of Black Prince Road, is a fascinating glimpse into the history of apothecaries and their trade in London. Although the association of this windmill with the Apothecaries Company has now been disproved, it is certain that the mill was in the tenancy, up until approximately 1790, of persons carrying on the trade of druggist and apothecary. Apothecaries were an essential part of the community in 18th century England, providing medicines, medical advice, and sometimes even surgical services. The Lambeth Drug Mill would have been a hive of activity, with the sound of grinding herbs and the scent of various concoctions filling the air. The windmill's unique design, with its tall sails and large grinding stones, would have been an iconic sight in the London landscape. Despite the disproved association with the Apothecaries Company, the Lambeth Drug Mill remains an intriguing piece of history. Its existence highlights the importance of the apothecary trade in London during this time and the innovative ways in which they utilized their resources to produce medicines. This photograph is a reminder of the rich history that lies hidden in the streets of London, waiting to be discovered.
