This evocative photograph captures the moment Marines disembark at Uig, Isle of Skye in Scotland during the Crofters' League Agitation of 1884. The Crofters' League was a movement formed to address the grievances of small-scale farmers, or crofters, against the landlords who owned vast tracts of land in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The dispute reached a boiling point in 1884 when thousands of crofters, led by the League, took to the streets in protest, demanding fairer rents and the right to buy their land. In response, the British government sent in troops, including the Marines, to quell the unrest. The image shows Marines disembarking from a ship, their uniforms and equipment at the ready as they prepare to make their way ashore. The rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions of the Isle of Skye are evident in the background, with the dark, stormy sky looming overhead.
