In this image, Jatayus, the king of the vultures, is shown in mid-air, fiercely attacking Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, as he carries off Sita, Rama's beloved wife, to his kingdom. Sita, in desperation, throws her precious jewellery to the earth below as a sign for her husband Rama, signaling for him to come to her rescue. The Ramayana is one of the two great epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahabharata.
