EDITORS COMMENTS
Jatayus, the Noble Vulture King, Fights Bravely to Rescue Sita from the Clutches of the Demon King Ravana in this Epic Scene from the Indian Mythological Tale, the Ramayana. In this image, Jatayus, the king of the vultures, is shown in mid-air, fiercely attacking Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, as he carries off Sita, Rama's beloved wife, to his kingdom. Sita, in desperation, throws her precious jewellery to the earth below as a sign for her husband Rama, signaling for him to come to her rescue. The Ramayana is one of the two great epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahabharata. This ancient Indian epic poem is attributed to the sage Valmiki and is considered a cornerstone of Hindu mythology. The story follows Prince Rama, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, and his quest to rescue his wife Sita, who has been abducted by Ravana. The scene depicted in this print is one of the most famous episodes in the Ramayana, known as the "Jatayu Vadh" or "Jatayu's Death." Jatayus, who was a loyal friend of Rama, sacrifices his life in a valiant attempt to rescue Sita from Ravana. His heroic act delays Ravana's escape, giving Rama and his brother Lakshmana enough time to begin their search for Sita. This stunning image captures the raw emotion and drama of this epic tale, with Jatayus' fierce determination and Sita's desperate pleas adding to the intensity of the scene. The intricate details of the characters, their clothing, and the setting transport us back to ancient India and the rich mythological world of the Ramayana.
