"Admiral Sir Hedworth Meux (1856-1929), formerly known as Lambton, is depicted in this striking photograph taken during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of Portsmouth in 1914. The Admiral served a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, retiring with the rank of Admiral in 1916. Prior to his military service, Meux attended the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and saw action in the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War. During the early years of the First World War, Meux played a crucial role in the defense of the British coastline, overseeing the Portsmouth fleet and coordinating naval operations against German submarines and raiders. In 1915, he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) for his services to the navy. Following his retirement from the Royal Navy, Meux entered politics, serving as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Portsmouth from January 1918 until the end of the year.
