EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the essence of Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna, a tragic figure in Russian history. Painted by Christina Robertson in 1840, it showcases the beauty and elegance of this young royal. Alexandra Nikolaevna was the beloved youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I and Princess Charlotte of Prussia. Her life took a sorrowful turn when she contracted tuberculosis before her marriage to Prince Frederick William of Hesse in 1844. Despite her illness, she bravely went through with the wedding. Sadly, Alexandra's health deteriorated further during pregnancy, leading to complications that claimed both her life and that of her premature son on the same day as his birth. This double tragedy left a profound impact on Russia's imperial family. In this painting, we see Alexandra standing gracefully alongside an adorable dog—a symbol of loyalty and companionship. She is dressed impeccably in a regal gown befitting her status as a grand duchess. The artist has captured every intricate detail from Alexandra's hairstyle to the delicate features on her face. Preserved within The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg, this artwork serves as a poignant reminder of Alexandra Nikolaevna's short but significant life. It encapsulates not only her physical beauty but also reflects upon the fragility and vulnerability experienced by those who held positions within royal dynasties during that era. Christina Robertson's skillful brushwork brings forth an emotional depth to this portrait—inviting viewers to contemplate both the tragedy that befell Alexandra Nikolaevna and the fleeting nature of human existence itself.
