Church Sheep
6th August 1955: Sheep huddle in the doorway of the Abbey on the tiny island of Iona, famous for its connection with St Columba who founded a community on Iona after he was expelled from Ireland. The Abbey, which fell into disrepair after the Reformation, is being rebuilt by craftsmen and ministers of the Iona Community. The Iona Community is a Christian settlement run by a group of Scottish ministers who offer religion to factory workers and people living in the poorer areas of Glasgow. Their head office is in the city but they all visit Iona for three months of the year to train new recruits and gather people together for a Christian camp. Church Sheep - A Glimpse into the Spiritual Haven of Iona
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Maurice Ambler in 1955, we are transported to the enchanting island of Iona. The image reveals a heartwarming scene as a group of sheep seek refuge within the doorway of the Abbey, which holds great historical and religious significance. Iona has long been renowned for its connection with St Columba, who sought solace on this tiny island after being expelled from Ireland. The Abbey itself had fallen into disrepair following the Reformation but is now undergoing restoration thanks to the dedicated craftsmen and ministers of the Iona Community. The Iona Community, led by Scottish ministers, extends their Christian teachings beyond Glasgow's city limits. They offer spiritual guidance to factory workers and residents living in impoverished areas. While their headquarters reside in Glasgow, they spend three months each year on Iona training new recruits and hosting Christian camps that bring people together. This poignant photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also symbolizes unity amidst adversity. The sheep huddle together seeking shelter within these sacred walls, reminding us that even amidst turmoil, faith can provide solace and strength. Maurice Ambler's skillful composition beautifully portrays both the architectural grandeur of the abbey and its humble visitors - an evocative testament to spirituality transcending boundaries. This archival piece serves as a timeless reminder of our innate need for community, connection with nature, and unwavering devotion in times of hardship.
