MARKET SQUARE, Malmesbury, Wiltshire. A rooftop view looking over Market Square, showing the market cross (c.1500) and the abbey ruins. The abbey was the setting for man's first flight attempt in the form of a monk named Elmer who threw himself from the abbey tower and subsequently broke both his legs in c. 1000. Photographed in 1864 by W Hanks.

BURY ST EDMUNDS, Suffolk. Aerial view of the town, abbey remains and St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The Cathedral was formerly the Church of St James within the abbey precinct. Adjoining it is the Norman Gate (1120-48) which lead from the town into the abbey interior. Abbeygate, to the right, lead onto the Great Court - the public area in front of the abbey complex. It was rebuilt after 1327 when rioting destroyed the original gate. Photographed in 1920. Aerofilms Collection (see Links).

JEWEL TOWER, Westminster, London. Middle Ages reconstruction drawing by Alan Sorrell. Jewel Tower in the foreground and Westminster Abbey in the distance. The Jewel Tower, or 'King's Privy Wardrobe', was built c.1365 to house Edward III's treasures. It is one of only two buildings of the original Palace of Westminster to survive the fire of 1834.
