EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in American history. Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first female director of the United States Mint, is seen alongside Edward Bruce, head of the Public Works of Art Project, as they meticulously inspect designs for the new Jefferson nickel in 1938. The Treasury Department had organized a competition to find an exceptional design for the five-cent coin, and this image showcases Mrs. Ross surrounded by 390 models that were submitted. Her expertise and discerning eye are evident as she carefully evaluates each entry. Born Nellie Davis Tayloe in 1876, Mrs. Ross was not only a trailblazing politician but also became known as a dedicated civil servant. She succeeded her husband William B. Ross to become Wyoming's 14th Governor from 1925-1927, making her the first woman governor of any U. S state. In this print captured by Harris & Ewing between 1905-1945 and now part of a private collection, we witness an iconic figure who shattered glass ceilings long before it became commonplace. It serves as a reminder of her remarkable achievements and contributions to American politics. As we admire this historical snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate how far our nation has come while acknowledging those who paved the way for progress with their unwavering dedication and groundbreaking accomplishments.
