EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in American history. Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first female director of the United States Mint, is seen alongside Edward Bruce, head of the Public Works of Art Project, as they meticulously inspect designs for the new Jefferson nickel in 1938. The Treasury Department had organized a competition to find an exceptional design for the five-cent coin, and this image showcases Mrs. Ross surrounded by 390 models that were submitted.
