EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the tense atmosphere of the trial of Philippe Petain (1856-1951), the controversial French military leader and head of the Vichy regime during World War II, as his former ally and French politician Pierre Jean Marie Laval (1883-1945) testifies against him on July 23, 1945. Laval, who served as Prime Minister of France twice, is seen here giving evidence at the trial, which took place in Paris. The two men, once close allies, now stood on opposing sides of history, with Laval being branded a traitor for his role in collaborating with the Nazis. Petain, known as Marshal Petain, had been a respected military hero before the war, having commanded the French Army during World War I. However, his decision to establish the collaborationist regime in Vichy France and his subsequent actions during the occupation of France led to his trial and eventual conviction for treason. This historical illustration, reminiscent of an old engraving, offers a glimpse into the complex and controversial period of French history during the Second World War.
