Johann Faust, German printer

Johann Fust (c.1400-1466), German printer. Fust came from a wealthy family in Mainz. Fust was associated with Johann Gutenberg. Some see Fust as the inventor of printing and Gutembergs instructor, whereas others see him more as a financier. After an acrimonius law suit with Gutenberg over a loan, which Fust won, Fust set up a printing works with Peter Schoffer. Their first work was a Psalter, a folio of 350 pages, which is the first book to have a complete date (14 August 1457). It also used large initials printed in two colours, using type made in two pieces. He is thought to have died of the plague while on a visit to Paris. This woodcut illustration comes from van Opmeers Opus chronographicum orbis universi, published at Amsterdam in 1611

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Johann Faust, a prominent German printer from the 15th century. Born into wealth in Mainz, Faust's legacy is intertwined with that of Johann Gutenberg, as they collaborated on groundbreaking printing techniques. While some credit Faust as the true inventor of printing and Gutenberg's mentor, others perceive him primarily as a financial supporter. The image showcases an exquisite woodcut illustration extracted from van Opmeers Opus chronographicum orbis universi, published in Amsterdam in 1611. The monochrome portrayal depicts Faust amidst his revolutionary printing press alongside Peter Schoffer, his partner at their renowned printing works. Their first masterpiece was the Psalter, a monumental folio comprising 350 pages and holds historical significance for being the first book to bear a complete date: August 14th, 1457. Tragically, Faust's life was cut short by the plague during a visit to Paris. Despite his untimely demise, his contributions to typography and book production remain indelible within history's annals. Notably innovative were large initials printed in two colors using type made in two pieces—an artistic feat that showcased Faust's mastery over his craft. This thought-provoking print serves as both an homage to Johann Faust's remarkable achievements and a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge through the ages.
