EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 17th-century artwork titled "Animals of Java". The masterpiece, created by Dutch-Danish royal historiographer Johannes Isacius Pontanus, offers a glimpse into the diverse fauna and flora observed during a Dutch voyage to the East Indies. The intricately detailed illustration features an array of fascinating creatures from Java, including a majestic rhinoceros, an awe-inspiring elephant, a serene tortoise, and an elegant iguana. These animals were encountered by Cornelis de Houtman during the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies in 1595. It was on this journey that they made their initial landfall at Java. Notably, Javan elephants sadly went extinct by the end of the 18th century; however, some managed to survive on Borneo. This artwork serves as both a historical record and testament to their existence. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this extraordinary piece. It is part of Pontanus' renowned book "Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia" which chronicles Amsterdam's history. With its blend of biology, geography, zoology, botany, and natural history elements captured within one frame—this print truly encapsulates the beauty and diversity found in nature while also providing valuable insights into centuries-old exploration journeys in Asia's rich landscapes.
