Oxo advertisement - Scott Antarctic expedition endorsement
Advertisement for Oxo as supplied to Captain Scott on his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The advert quotes a letter from Scott who wrote, The various preparations of Oxo have been found very useful and suitable for our camp purposes. Picture shows penguins looking curiously at an empty jar of Oxo as Scotts party ploughs onwards to their destination. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the early 20th century, a jar of Oxo sits empty amidst the desolate landscape of the Antarctic, surrounded by curious penguins. The scene is a poignant reminder of the ill-fated Scott Antarctic Expedition of 1912, during which the British explorer and his team sought to reach the South Pole. The empty Oxo jar is a testament to the importance of this food staple in the expedition's provisions. In a letter to the Oxford Meat Extract Company, written just months before his tragic demise, Captain Robert Falcon Scott expressed his gratitude for the "various preparations of Oxo" which had proven "very useful and suitable for our camp purposes." The advertisement for Oxo, as it appeared in The Tatler on March 27, 1912, bears a quote from this letter, highlighting the product's role in the team's survival. Tragically, the advertisement was published just two days before Scott and the remaining two members of his team, Edgar Evans and Henry Bowers, succumbed to exposure and starvation. The image of penguins looking on at the empty jar adds an ironic touch to the advertisement, as these birds were a common sight in the Antarctic waters that the expedition relied on for sustenance. The enduring image of the empty Oxo jar and the penguins serves as a poignant reminder of the human endeavor to explore the unknown, and the importance of reliable provisions in the face of adversity.
