EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in London's history, as the figures atop Queen Victoria Memorial are having their covers removed for the first time. Dedicated in 1911, the Memorial was a tribute to Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. The statue was unveiled by her grandsons, King George V of the United Kingdom and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, during an emotional ceremony. The sculpture was the work of Sir Thomas Brock, with the surround designed by Sir Aston Webb. The Memorial, a Grade I listed building, was constructed from 2,300 tons of white marble and took over two decades to complete, with the final bronze statues being installed in 1924. The anticipation in the crowds gathered around the Memorial is palpable, as they witness this historic moment. This photograph, taken in the 1890s, offers a glimpse into London's rich history and the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Victoria Memorial.
