Emperor Than Thai - Tonkin, Vietnam
Annam Emperor Than Thai (Nguyen Phuoc Chieu) (Nguyen Phuoc Buu Lan) (1879-1954) (reigned 1889-1907). He encouraged French-style education but maintained bitter feelings over their control of his country, also supported numerous building projects and took an interest in the everyday lives of his subjects, when he tried to join a resistance movement in China, he was arrested by the French who declared him insane and forced the Emperor to abdicate, he was exiled initially in 1907 to Vung Tau and later in 1916 to Reunion Island, in 1945 he was allowed to return home but was kept under house arrest in Vung Tau, South Vietnam. Emperor Than Thai of Tonkin, Vietnam (Annam), circa 1895: A Regal Portrait of a Complex Reign This evocative photograph captures Emperor Than Thai of Tonkin, Vietnam (Annam), in the prime of his reign around 1895. Born as Nguyen Phuoc Chieu, he ascended the throne in 1889 at the age of 10, and was later known as Nguyen Phuoc Buu Lan. Than Thai is depicted here in resplendent imperial finery, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Annamese royalty. During his reign, Emperor Than Thai encouraged French-style education, recognizing its potential benefits for his subjects. However, he harbored deep-seated resentment towards the French colonial rule, which would eventually lead to his downfall. Than Thai's desire for independence and his attempts to join resistance movements in China did not go unnoticed by the French colonial authorities. In 1907, he was arrested and declared insane, leading to his abdication and exile to Vung Tau, Vietnam. In 1916, Than Thai was exiled again, this time to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Despite his tumultuous reign and eventual exile, Than Thai remained deeply connected to his people and took an interest in their everyday lives. He is remembered for his patronage of numerous building projects and his dedication to the welfare of his subjects.
