EDITORS COMMENTS
Emperor Than Thai of Tonkin, Vietnam (Annam), circa 1895: A Regal Portrait of a Complex Reign This evocative photograph captures Emperor Than Thai of Tonkin, Vietnam (Annam), in the prime of his reign around 1895. Born as Nguyen Phuoc Chieu, he ascended the throne in 1889 at the age of 10, and was later known as Nguyen Phuoc Buu Lan. Than Thai is depicted here in resplendent imperial finery, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Annamese royalty. During his reign, Emperor Than Thai encouraged French-style education, recognizing its potential benefits for his subjects. However, he harbored deep-seated resentment towards the French colonial rule, which would eventually lead to his downfall. Than Thai's desire for independence and his attempts to join resistance movements in China did not go unnoticed by the French colonial authorities. In 1907, he was arrested and declared insane, leading to his abdication and exile to Vung Tau, Vietnam. In 1916, Than Thai was exiled again, this time to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Despite his tumultuous reign and eventual exile, Than Thai remained deeply connected to his people and took an interest in their everyday lives. He is remembered for his patronage of numerous building projects and his dedication to the welfare of his subjects. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of Than Thai's reign, a time of cultural exchange, resistance, and ultimately, loss of sovereignty. The image captures the regal elegance and the intrigue of a bygone era in Vietnamese history.
