Venus and Anchises, c1889-1890, (c1930). Creator: Sir William Blake Richmond

Venus and Anchises, c1889-1890, (c1930). Illustration to the " Epipsychidion", a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, depicting the illicit meeting of Venus, goddess of love, and her earthly lover, the shepherd Anchises. The penalty for mortals for looking at a god or goddess was to be turned to stone. As Venus walks, accompanied by lions and a flight of doves, she turns autumn leaves into spring flowers and apple blossom, and night becomes day. Painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. From " Modern Masterpieces of British Art". [The Amalgamated Press Ltd. London, c1930]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Sir William Blake Richmond's masterpiece, "Venus and Anchises" created between 1889-1890. The artwork, featured in the book "Modern Masterpieces of British Art" illustrates a scene from Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Epipsychidion". In this enchanting depiction, Venus, the goddess of love, engages in an illicit meeting with her mortal lover, the shepherd Anchises. The image showcases the inherent danger faced by mortals who dare to gaze upon gods or goddesses. As Venus gracefully walks alongside lions and a flight of doves, she effortlessly transforms autumn leaves into vibrant spring flowers and apple blossoms while turning night into day. This magical display highlights her divine powers. Richmond's attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this painting. The lush garden setting provides a backdrop for their clandestine rendezvous as they meet amidst nature's beauty. Both figures are dressed elegantly; Venus exudes femininity while Anchises embodies masculinity. The composition beautifully combines elements from Greek mythology and literature with Richmond's artistic vision. It transports viewers to Mount Ida where this forbidden encounter takes place. "Venus and Anchises" serves as a testament to Richmond's mastery of color and form within the Arts and Crafts movement during the late 19th century. This timeless piece continues to captivate audiences with its portrayal of love, perilous meetings between mortals and deities, and the transformative power of art itself.
