The South-West End of Alph Avenue, 1912, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

The South-West End of Alph Avenue, Showing Our Return Route Between The Ice Pinnacles and the Moraine, 1912, (1913). Ice falls and Royal Society Range beyond Terminus Camp, Koettlitz Glacier. Mount Dromedary and Mount Huggins in the distance. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history - the South-West End of Alph Avenue, 1912. Taken by artist Frank Debenham during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this image offers a glimpse into the challenging and awe-inspiring landscape that awaited these brave explorers. In the distance, we see the majestic Royal Society Range beyond Terminus Camp, Koettlitz Glacier. The towering ice falls create an ethereal backdrop against which Mount Dromedary and Mount Huggins stand tall. It is amidst this frozen wilderness that Scott and his team embarked on their quest to reach the geographic South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition was not only driven by a desire for exploration but also aimed to continue important scientific work initiated during Scott's previous voyage to Antarctica. A diverse group of experts accompanied him, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Tragically though they reached their goal on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Stranded by blizzards and faced with insurmountable challenges ahead of them; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their diaries – testaments to their bravery and determination in pushing boundaries for human exploration. This powerful photograph serves as a reminder of their extraordinary journey into one of Earth's most unforgiving environments.
