EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant painting by Jean-Jacques Hauer captures the emotional farewell of King Louis XVI of France (1754-1793) to his family on January 20, 1793, just days before his execution during the French Revolution. The scene takes place in the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The king, wearing a simple brown coat, stands between his wife, Marie Antoinette (1755-1793), and their children: Louis-Charles, the Dauphin (future King Louis XVII), Marie-Thérèse, and Louis-Joseph. The queen, with a handkerchief to her eyes, is crying, while the children seem to be looking at their father with a mixture of sadness and confusion. The eldest daughter, Madame Élisabeth (1764-1806), is embracing her father, her face filled with sorrow. The king's brother, Louis-Auguste, Duke of Bourbon, stands behind him, offering a hand of support. The painting, executed in the classical style, is a poignant reminder of the human cost of political upheaval and the enduring bond between family members during times of crisis. The painting is now housed in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, France, and is a significant piece of heritage art that offers a glimpse into the historical events of the late 18th century.
