Louis XVI of France, the ill-fated monarch who met a tragic end during the French Revolution. In 1798, an engraving titled "The martyrdom of Louis XVI, King of France" depicted his final moments on the scaffold. Charles Claude de Flahaut, Comte d'Angiviller, captured his regal presence in a painting from 1763 by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. On January 21st, 1793, at Place de la Revolution in Paris, King Louis XVI faced execution as shown in an engraving by Berthaut after Swebach. The image portrays the solemn moment when the guard exhibits the king's head on the scaffold. A drawing from that same year at Musee Du Louvre showcases Louis XVI at age 31 - a man burdened with immense responsibility and facing an uncertain fate. The tomb of Louis XVI and his family is shrouded in mystery with hidden silhouettes surrounding it between 1793 and 1800. These enigmatic figures add to the intrigue surrounding their final resting place. Two landscapes also feature these anonymous silhouettes - one containing seven and another containing fifteen. "The Royal Family's last Farewell" took place on January 20th, 1793 - just one day before Louis XVI's execution. Engraved by Carbonneau for Histoire de la Revolution Francaise by Louis Blanc (1811-82), this poignant scene captures their emotional farewell amidst turbulent times. Various artworks depict this historic event such as a colored engraving showcasing "Execution of Louis XVI" on January 21st, while another piece depicts it through oil on copper titled "The Execution of Louis XVI. " Both highlight this pivotal moment that marked not only the end of a reign but also symbolized profound changes within society.
