Crevassed Ice at Entrance to Priestley Glacier, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick

Crevassed Ice at Entrance to Priestley Glacier, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Crevassed Ice at Entrance to Priestley Glacier, c1911" captures the breathtaking and treacherous beauty of the Antarctic landscape. Taken by artist G Murray Levick during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition in 1911, this image is a testament to the courage and determination of these explorers. Scott's Terra Nova Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to conduct scientific research in this remote region. The team consisted of experts from various fields, including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Their goal was to expand our understanding of Antarctica while pushing the boundaries of human exploration. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions were met with crushing disappointment. They discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to the South Pole by a month. Despite this setback and facing harsh blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, they pressed forward bravely. Tragically though unsurprisingly given their circumstances; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March 1912. It would be eight months before their bodies were found along with their poignant diaries. This photograph serves as a haunting reminder of both the indomitable spirit that drove these men forward into uncharted territory as well as the unforgiving nature of one of Earth's most extreme environments. It stands as a tribute to those who risked everything for knowledge and discovery in an era when such expeditions represented humanity's relentless pursuit for progress against all odds.
