False-colour SEM of a taste bud on tongue surface

Taste bud. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the apical part of a taste bud (pink at centre), known as a gustatory caliculus, on the dorsal surface of the tongue. Taste buds are barrel-shaped organs which extend throughout the thickness of the epithelial layer and contain the gustatory sensory cells. Each taste bud opens onto the surface through an aperture, the gustatory pore, seen here as a round dark area. Taste buds are also found in the soft palate, the epiglottis and part of the pharynx. The background is occupied by layers of stratified squamous epithelium. Magnification: x1040 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1780 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of a taste bud on the surface of the tongue. At the center, we can observe a pink gustatory caliculus, which represents the apical part of the taste bud. Taste buds are fascinating barrel-shaped organs that span across the epithelial layer and house gustatory sensory cells responsible for our sense of taste. The round dark area in this image is known as the gustatory pore, through which each taste bud opens onto the tongue's surface. While most commonly found on the dorsal surface of our tongues, taste buds also exist in other areas such as the soft palate, epiglottis, and parts of the pharynx. The background features layers of stratified squamous epithelium that provide structural support to these intricate sensory organs. Magnified at x1040 for 6x7cm size or x1780 for 4x5 inch size prints, this microscopic photograph offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy. It highlights not only our complex biological makeup but also emphasizes how even minuscule structures like taste buds play a crucial role in our daily lives by allowing us to savor flavors and indulge in culinary experiences.
