US eclipse expedition, West Africa, 1889

US eclipse expedition, West Africa, 1889. This expedition was led by US astronomer David Peck Todd (1855-1939). These huts housed the array of instruments used by the expedition. The party of astronomers sailed from New York, USA, on the USS Pensacola. They landed at Cape Ledo (in what is now Angola) and set up camp. Others present included US astronomer Harold Jacoby (1865-1932) and US meteorologist Frank H. Bigelow (1851-1924). The eclipse, which took place during the afternoon of 22 December 1889, was obscured on land by clouds. Observations were made from the ship, which followed the eclipse track at sea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the US eclipse expedition to West Africa in 1889, led by renowned American astronomer David Peck Todd. The image showcases a cluster of huts that served as the base for an impressive array of scientific instruments used during the expedition. Accompanied by fellow astronomers Harold Jacoby and Frank H. Bigelow, as well as other researchers, Todd embarked on this ambitious journey aboard the USS Pensacola from New York. Upon reaching Cape Ledo (now Angola), the team established their camp and eagerly prepared for their observations. However, luck was not on their side as clouds obscured the afternoon eclipse that occurred on December 22nd, 1889. Undeterred by this meteorological setback, they resorted to making observations from their ship which diligently followed the path of totality at sea. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in astronomical research during the late 19th century. It highlights both the dedication and challenges faced by these pioneering scientists in their quest to unravel celestial mysteries. The presence of various equipment such as telescopes and other devices further emphasizes their commitment to advancing our understanding of space. As we admire this monochrome snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring curiosity about our universe and how far we have come since those early days of exploration and discovery.
