Preserving Paradise - Holiday Makers Unite to Protect Porthcothan Bay, Cornwall in the 1950s
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the idyllic Porthcothan Bay in Cornwall during the 1950s. A group of determined holiday makers can be seen diligently digging a trench in the soft golden sand, their spades working tirelessly under the warm summer sun. But what motivated these beachgoers to undertake such an unusual task? The answer lies beyond the frame – cars! In an effort to preserve this pristine coastal haven and prevent vehicles from encroaching upon its beauty, these resourceful individuals took matters into their own hands. The trench they meticulously crafted stretched an impressive 150 yards long and was two feet deep. Once completed, it served as a formidable barrier against any rogue automobiles attempting to drive onto the sandy shores. To further fortify their creation, sea water was ingeniously diverted into the trench, effectively deterring even the most audacious drivers. A single bridge wide enough for prams gracefully spanned across this watery moat - a testament to both practicality and inclusivity. It is heartening to witness how community spirit prevailed during those simpler times as people rallied together for a common cause – safeguarding their beloved slice of paradise. This remarkable photograph encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards preserving nature's wonders for future generations.
