EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a bold and defiant act of protest by the British Suffragettes in 1912. The image shows the extensive damage inflicted on the plate glass windows of the Hamburg-Amerika shipping line building in Cockspur Street, London. The windows were smashed during a series of coordinated attacks, known as the W.S.P.U's (Women's Social and Political Union) window smashing spree, which took place in March of that year. The Suffragettes, led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, were fighting for women's right to vote and were known for their militant tactics. The damage caused to the Hamburg-Amerika building is estimated to have amounted to 2,000 marks. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the intensity and determination of the Suffragette movement as they continued their struggle for women's suffrage, ultimately leading to the Representation of the People Act in 1918, which granted some women the right to vote.
