Parra Sinensis, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana.A jacana in the monotypic genus Hydrophasianus. Jacanas are a group of waders in the family Jacanidae. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Parra Sinensis, also known as the Pheasant-Tailed Jacana, a remarkable bird belonging to the monotypic genus Hydrophasianus. The image depicts a stunning jacana from the Himalaya Mountains, beautifully captured in an engraving dating back to 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould's passion for birds led him to work as a taxidermist and earned him the nickname "the bird-stuffer" within the Zoological Society. His fascination with avian species from Eastern regions began when a collection of Himalayan mountain birds arrived at the Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived an ambitious project: publishing hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously crafted each drawing before transferring them onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". This particular print captures not only the exotic beauty of this Asian bird but also provides insight into early nineteenth-century natural history exploration. Its intricate details highlight both its vibrant coloration and unique markings. The Liszt Collection proudly presents this enchanting piece that transports viewers back to a time when British artists like John and Elizabeth Gould were pushing boundaries in their pursuit of capturing nature's wonders through artistry and scientific observation.
