EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of relaxation and camaraderie at the Langbourne Club for City Women in 1920s London. The club, located on Fishmonger Hall Street in the heart of the City, provided a much-needed space for women who worked in this bustling financial district to unwind and connect with one another. In this image, members of the club can be seen enjoying their leisure time on deck chairs while being served by a uniformed waitress. The view from the rooftop garden showcases the iconic Pool of London section of the River Thames, with Tower Bridge majestically spanning across it. The photograph is part of "Wonderful London, Volume 3", edited by Arthur St John Adcock, which beautifully captures various aspects of life in early 20th century London. It offers us a glimpse into an era when women were breaking barriers and finding their place within professional circles. The Langbourne Club was not only a social haven but also symbolized progress and empowerment for working women during that time. This image serves as a testament to their resilience and determination to create spaces where they could thrive both personally and professionally. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of how far society has come since then while acknowledging that there is still work to be done towards achieving true gender equality.
