Wagon Hill, 5km south of Ladysmith, was an important British position during the Siege of Ladysmith which lasted from 1 November 1899 to 28 February 1900. On 6 January the position was stormed by Boer forces but they were repulsed after a fierce battle. The final clearance was achieved by the Devons (1st Devonshire Rifles)
