Ashton Station, Devon, c. 1950s

A view of Ashton Station, on the Teign Valley line, Devon, c.1950s.
Ashton station opened in 1882 and closed to passengers in June 1958. It was the only station on the line to have its own engine shed, but this became disused in the early 20th century (finally being demolished in 1960, one year before the station fully closed in 1961).
Camping Coaches were placed at Ashton in the 1930s and in 1952

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming Ashton Station in Devon during the 1950s. Nestled along the picturesque Teign Valley line, this station holds a rich history that dates back to its opening in 1882. Although it ceased passenger operations in June 1958, Ashton Station remains an iconic landmark of its time. One unique feature of this station was its very own engine shed, making it stand out from other stations on the line. However, as time passed, this shed fell into disuse and was eventually demolished in 1960 - just one year before the complete closure of the station in 1961. During the 1930s and again in 1952, Camping Coaches were introduced at Ashton Station. These cozy accommodations provided a delightful experience for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat amidst nature's beauty. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by STEAM Museum of GWR, we are transported to an era where steam locomotives gracefully chugged along these tracks while passengers eagerly awaited their next adventure or bid farewell to loved ones. The nostalgic ambiance exuded by Ashton Station is truly timeless and reminds us of simpler times gone by. Let this enchanting print serve as a window into history, allowing us to appreciate and preserve the heritage of Ashton Station for generations to come.
