Ashton Station, Devon, c. 1920

A view of Ashton Station, on the Teign Valley line, Devon, c.1920.
Ashton station opened in 1882 and closed to passengers in June 1958. It was the only station on the line to have its own engine shed, but this became disused in the early 20th century (finally being demolished in 1960, one year before the station fully closed in 1961)

1920 1920s Devon Station Ashton Teign Valley

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1920s, capturing a picturesque view of Ashton Station in Devon. Nestled along the scenic Teign Valley line, this charming station opened its doors to passengers in 1882 and became an integral part of the local community for many years. Ashton Station holds a unique distinction among its counterparts on the line, as it boasted its very own engine shed. However, as time passed and technology advanced, this once bustling hub fell into disuse during the early 20th century. The engine shed itself met its fate in 1960 when it was finally demolished, just one year before the station's ultimate closure in 1961. In this snapshot frozen in time, we can imagine steam locomotives chugging along these tracks while passengers eagerly await their arrival or bid farewell to loved ones. The surrounding landscape exudes tranquility and natural beauty that perfectly complemented Ashton Station's idyllic setting. Today, thanks to this remarkable print preserved by STEAM Museum of the GWR (Great Western Railway), we are granted a glimpse into an era long gone but not forgotten. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and our desire for connection through rail travel—a reminder of how stations like Ashton played vital roles within communities across Britain during their heyday.
