Created in 1829, this remarkable piece of Russian star cartography was the earliest of its kind in Russia and drew inspiration from earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. Against a striking black background, this European illustration transports us back to the 19th century, offering an enchanting glimpse into astronomical exploration during that era. The intricate gold leaf accents add a touch of elegance to the artwork while highlighting the brilliance of each star within Ursa Major. Labelled with Cyrillic characters and depicted through mythological figures and animals, this map provides both an educational tool for astronomers and a visual feast for art enthusiasts. The meticulously designed grid and diagram serve as coordinates guiding our eyes through this cosmic wonderland. Proudly displayed on Plate I of Reissig's celestial atlas, Ursa Major takes center stage among other constellations. Punched holes along the edges suggest it was once part of a larger publication or book. This extraordinary photograph captures not only the beauty but also the rich history embedded within these stars.
