TEM of erythrocytes passing through capillary wall

False-colour transmission electron micrograph showing the flexibility of red blood cells, or erythrocytes. Three of them are seen in a deformed state as they pass through the wall of a small capillary, which runs from top left to bottom right. This process is known as diapedesis & is a characteristic of inflammation. The capillary circulation slows down & large numbers of white cells, together with some red cells, push through the capillary wall into surrounding tissue. A quantity of blood plasma escapes at the same time. Loss of these blood components is responsible for swelling that accompanies inflammation. Magnification: x2500 at 35mm size. Ref: Microcosmos, fig. 2.43, p.37

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of erythrocytes, or red blood cells, as they navigate through the capillary wall. In this false-colour transmission electron micrograph, we witness the remarkable flexibility of these cells in action. Three erythrocytes can be observed in a deformed state as they undergo diapedesis, a process characteristic of inflammation. The small capillary, running diagonally from top left to bottom right, becomes a stage for this fascinating phenomenon. As the capillary circulation slows down during inflammation, an influx of white cells and some red cells forcefully push through the capillary wall into surrounding tissue. Simultaneously, a quantity of blood plasma escapes alongside them. These escaping blood components are responsible for the swelling that often accompanies inflammatory responses. The loss of these vital elements triggers an immune reaction within our bodies. At a magnification level of x2500 at 35mm size, this image offers us an up-close look at how our body's defense mechanisms come into play during times of distress and injury. It serves as a reminder that even on such microscopic scales, there is constant activity and adaptation occurring within us. Science Photo Library continues to provide awe-inspiring visuals like this one that shed light on various aspects of human anatomy and physiology – reminding us just how intricately designed our bodies truly are.
