Synapse nerve junctions, SEM
Synapse nerve junctions. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nerve cells showing the synapses (junctions, bulges) between them. At a synapse an electrical signal is transmitted from one cell to the next in only one direction. When an electrical signal reaches a synapse it triggers the release of neurotransmitter chemicals from vesicles (yellow) in the presynaptic cell. The neurotransmitters cross a microscopic gap called the synaptic cleft and bind to receptors on the postsynaptic cell, causing it to propagate an electrical impulse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of synapse nerve junctions. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a glimpse into the complex network of nerve cells and their connections. The synapses, depicted as bulges between the cells, serve as crucial relay stations for electrical signals. At each synapse, an extraordinary process unfolds. When an electrical signal reaches its destination, it triggers the release of neurotransmitter chemicals from yellow vesicles in the presynaptic cell. These neurotransmitters then traverse a microscopic gap known as the synaptic cleft before binding to receptors on the postsynaptic cell. This interaction sets off a chain reaction that propels an electrical impulse forward in one direction only. The image not only highlights the biological marvels within our bodies but also emphasizes how essential these neural pathways are for relaying messages throughout our system. It is a testament to both normal anatomy and healthy neurological function. With its false-coloured presentation and incredible detail captured by a scanning electron microscope, this photograph offers us an opportunity to appreciate the complexity and elegance of our own neural architecture. It serves as a reminder of just how remarkable our nervous system truly is – orchestrating countless interactions between cells, neurons, and synapses with seamless precision.
