Synapses are the connections between neurons in the brain, and are responsible for transmitting electrical signals from one neuron to another, allowing information to be exchanged between cells. Synapses play a critical role in learning and memory, as they allow us to store and recall information and can be either excitatory or inhibitory, meaning that they either increase or decrease the activity of neurons. Excitatory synapses cause neurons to fire more frequently, while inhibitory synapses cause them to fire less often. The strength of a synapse is determined by its number of connections and how much neurotransmitter is released when it is activated. The more connections a synapse has and the more neurotransmitter it releases when activated, the stronger it becomes over time. This process is known as synaptic plasticity and allows us to learn new things and remember old ones.
