Mars Express launch, artwork

Mars Express launch, artwork. This European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft was launched on 2 June 2003 on a Soyuz-FG rocket. Here, the fairing has detached from the rockets upper stage to reveal the spacecraft (upper centre). The yellow tanks are the Fregat booster that was used to raise the spacecraft from this parking orbit and eventually set it on its interplanetary trajectory to Mars. Mars Express, the ESAs first Mars mission, arrived at Mars in December 2003. Since then, its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth. The mission has since been extended to at least 2014

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the awe-inspiring moment of the Mars Express launch, a significant milestone in space exploration. The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched this spacecraft on 2 June 2003 using a Soyuz-FG rocket, marking their first mission to Mars. In this stunning image, we witness the fairing separating from the upper stage of the rocket, unveiling the majestic spacecraft at its core. The yellow tanks visible in the artwork are part of the Fregat booster that played a crucial role in propelling Mars Express from its parking orbit and setting it on an interplanetary trajectory towards Mars. After months of travel through our solar system, this groundbreaking mission reached its destination in December 2003. Since then, Mars Express has been diligently mapping and studying every nook and cranny of the Red Planet with its advanced sensors. Transmitting invaluable images and data back to Earth, it has significantly contributed to our understanding of Martian geology and atmosphere. Originally planned for completion by 2014, this remarkable mission has been extended due to its immense success and ongoing scientific discoveries. As we gaze upon this extraordinary piece of artistry capturing humanity's quest for knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries, we cannot help but marvel at both our technological prowess and insatiable curiosity about distant planets like Mars.
