ECG electrode

ECG electrode on a patient. Electrodes respond to electrical impulses in the heart. They are stuck to the skin with a removable sticky pad (white, square) and the cable (yellow) carries an electrical signal to an electrocardiography (ECG) machine. ECGs use a series of electrodes to pick up the electrical activity of the heart muscle. The characteristic trace produced as the heart beats and relaxes can be studied for signs of a heart disorder. Photographed at the Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands
