Tehidy, Illogan, Cornwall. Whit Monday, 20th May 1918

Deeds of the property being given by Viscountess Falmouth to Mrs Pendarves in the first stage of the conversion of the property to a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis sufferers by Cornwall County Council. Crowds of people are listening to the presentation on a sunny day. The manor of Tehidy was owned by the Basset family who prospered from mining and their vast estate. The 40 bedroom mansion house was built in 1855 to replace the earlier mansion of 1734. The manor was sold in 1916 ending 700 years of Basset rule. The fire devastated the building two weeks after the hospital opened and it was rebuilt by the County Council. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Tehidy, Illogan, Cornwall. It was taken on Whit Monday, 20th May 1918, during the presentation of deeds by Viscountess Falmouth to Mrs Pendarves. This marked the first stage of converting Tehidy into a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers under the management of Cornwall County Council. Underneath the warm rays of a sunny day, crowds gather around to witness this historic event. The photograph showcases people from all walks of life attentively listening to the presentation. Their faces reflect hope and anticipation for what this new venture will bring to their community. Tehidy Manor holds great historical significance as it was once owned by the prosperous Basset family who amassed their wealth through mining endeavors. The magnificent mansion house with its 40 bedrooms was constructed in 1855 as a replacement for an earlier mansion dating back to 1734. However, in 1916, after ruling over Tehidy for an impressive span of seven centuries, the Bassett family sold their beloved manor. Tragically, just two weeks after opening its doors as a hospital, fire ravaged through Tehidy Manor causing extensive damage. Nevertheless, thanks to Cornwall County Council's determination and resilience, they rebuilt this architectural gem. The photographer behind this poignant image is Arthur William Jordan whose lens beautifully captured not only buildings but also country estates and houses that hold stories within their walls.
