Gymnasium at Tehidy, Illogan, Cornwall. Probably 1916-1918

Interior of gymnasium with young men on the horse, parallel bars and other apparatus, probably during the First World War. The manor of Tehidy was owned by the Basset family who prospered from mining and their vast estate. The 40 bedroom mansion house was built in 1855 to replace the earlier mansion of 1734. The manor was sold in 1916 ending 700 years of Basset rule. The house was acquired for the treatment of tuberculosis sufferers and handed over to Cornwall County Council on Whit Monday 20th May 1918. The fire devastated the building two weeks after the hospital opened and it was rebuilt by the County Council. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the history of Tehidy Manor, located in Illogan, Cornwall. Taken between 1916 and 1918 during the tumultuous years of the First World War, it showcases the interior of Tehidy's gymnasium bustling with young men engaged in various physical activities. The gymnasium features a horse, parallel bars, and other apparatus that were likely used for military training purposes. Tehidy Manor holds great significance as it was once owned by the prosperous Basset family who amassed their wealth through mining ventures. With its impressive 40 bedrooms, this magnificent mansion was constructed in 1855 to replace an earlier version from 1734. However, after seven centuries under Basset rule, the manor was sold in 1916. Following its sale, Tehidy Manor underwent a transformation into a hospital dedicated to treating tuberculosis patients. On Whit Monday of May 20th, 1918, ownership was transferred to Cornwall County Council for this noble purpose. Tragically though, just two weeks after opening its doors as a hospital facility, fire ravaged the building. Despite this setback, Tehidy Manor would rise again thanks to the resilience and determination of Cornwall County Council. They undertook rebuilding efforts promptly and restored this historic site back to its former glory. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan - whose lens captured not only buildings but also moments frozen in time - this image serves as both a testament to military training during wartime and an enduring symbol of
